Report Details

Occurrence date: November/2002
Location: Walker County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: New Waverly
Time / Conditions: 05:00 — Dark.
# of Witnesses: 2

Witness Account:
My mom and I went hunting. We left early because I had to take our stands to their spots. I got to my spot and set up my stand and my mom went on to hers which was about 200 yards up.

Well it was still before light and I was lying under my ladder stand waiting for it to get light and the woods were dark but the sky was getting just a little lighter where you could see trees moving if you looked up. I heard something come so I rolled in to a shoot position and I could see limbs moving about 9-10 feet up the same path we had walked when this black image walked out and just stood there. After about 10 seconds of me trying to figure out what it could be I could only think bigfoot. At that time you could start to hear my gun rattle because I was shaking and what ever it was turned and looked at me and took a deep breath and stared. I told myself if it comes I would fire - if not I wouldn?t. And I clicked my safety off and it took off moving up toward my mom?s stand.

About an hour went by and I called for my mom. She heard me and we started walking to each other and she told me she saw the darnedest thing. She said a few does came running out of the woods running into tree like something was after them and then I told her what I saw and we left.

It was weird because a few weeks later I heard there was a footprint found on Lake Conroe not too far from there.

Sounds:
Just breathing.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Walter Blake

This report is the result of an investigation of an incident that allegedly occurred in November 2002 in the Sam Houston National Forest in Walker County, Texas.

I interviewed the observer and his mother at length. Both individuals struck me as honest and very cooperative. Upon comprehensively questioning both, I could detect no signs of deception. Further, I could not attribute the incident to some sort of misidentification.

The witness told me that he was hunting with his mother on opening day of deer season, and had packed in two ladder stands in the wee hours of the morning, in an attempt to secure the location and beat other hunters into this prime location. The stands were placed and secured and the witness lay down on the ground to relax while awaiting the coming dawn. As sunrise began to emerge, the witness detected an animal in close proximity to his position and thinking it to be a hog or large deer the witness turned to a prone shooting position towards the oncoming but as yet unseen animal.

The witness recalled noticing limbs shaking and moving against the glow of the early morning sky, some 9 to 10 feet off the ground. Apparently, the animal was coming up the same trail that he had used to earlier access his position. When the animal stepped out of the thick palmetto and brush, it was not at all what he had expected; instead he was looking at a large black animal standing upright. The witness stated that all he could think at the time was: ?Bigfoot!?

The witness nervously decided that he would only shoot the upright subject if it threatened or charged him. Aside from the normal sounds of approach the only other sound heard by the witness was that of the heavy breaths the subject took as it appeared to look directly at him. At this point the witness disengaged the safety of his rifle. As soon as he had done that, the dark and upright subject quickly evacuated the area, seemingly towards the witness?s mother.

During our conversations the claimant recalled no other details about the subject; the light was very dim and the encounter lasted for only 10 - 15 seconds. The witness did recall that he experienced extreme fear. He also remembered thinking that his rifle did not seem adequate and there was no way he could bring down such a large target before ?it got to me.?

After the subject had left the scene and as soon as the witness could gather his senses he immediately got up in the tree stand as he no longer desired to be on the ground. Once it became full light, about an hour later, the witness got down and went to check on his mother, whistling to her as was their custom to warn of his approach. Once they reached each other the mother began telling of seeing a doe run out from his direction and act very strange, jumping up in the air and running into trees and then turning around and going back the way it had come only to reappear and repeat the antics several times. The witness then recounted what he had experienced to his mother and they immediately left for the truck. They did not return to look for tracks or any other physical evidence as the witness was rather stunned and the mother really did not know what to make of her son?s story.

Subsequently I interviewed the mother who did not see unusual animals but she did recollect that she heard some rather heavy movement in the woods nearby; she assumed it was the crazy deer or possibly hogs moving through the area. The mother is a lifelong resident of the area and grew up hunting in the Sam Houston National Forest with various family members and her late husband. She decided early on to teach these outdoor skills to her two sons and they still hunt the area together today. When I asked if her son had experienced any adverse affects from his encounter, she replied, ?Oh yes, for about two years afterward I would have to walk him to his stand with a flashlight and then go on to my stand?once he was off the ground he would be alright.? She said it was a little odd that a big strong 20-year-old man would all of the sudden begin this behavior. Obviously she has full faith that her son?s story is true.

In conclusion, after my lengthy interviews with both witnesses, I could find no reason to discount this report. There have been numerous similar accounts within a few miles of the area including two reported visual encounters by NAWAC investigators, strange aural encounters, and numerous track finds as noted by the witness. It is my opinion that the early arrival of these two hunters put them in prime positions to intercept game that would be on the move as other hunters started entering the area at daybreak. I can only imagine the frustration of an elusive animal having its territory overrun on such a morning by hunters seemingly coming out of nowhere and from every direction.
