Class 1d

Two men describe midnight yard encounter near Jasper.

Report Details

Occurrence date: January/2003
Location: Jasper County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Jasper
Time / Conditions: 00:00 — Pine/oak forest, creek bottoms, thick woods.
# of Witnesses: 2

Witness Account:
Me and my friend were at my uncle's house. We were on the back porch playing darts. We started to notice that there was a lot of meteors. We stepped into the back yard to get a better view. We were facing towards the front yard. I was looking up when I noticed something move out of the corner of my eye. I looked and there was a creature around 5 foot tall running through the front yard, from left side of the yard to the right side, it was not large like most reports, it had muscle definition, black or dark brown hair, no neck, no hair on the face, chest and stomach area, inside of the arms or palms of the hands. Me and my friend saw the thing, but it wasn't big like most people describe. It was just going through his yard at kinda a slow pace until it saw us. Then it ran faster than anything I have ever seen, and I live in the woods, and go hunting. I sat there thinking "What was that?" I was quiet for a while, I didn't want to say anything and sound crazy, and hey I just saw a bigfoot. I looked at my friend Aaron, he had a strange look on his face and he was shaking his head, he looked at the same spot in the yard. I asked "did you see something?" He replied yes. I then asked "did it look like it was on two legs running upright?" He replied yes. Then my heart really skipped a beat, not only did I just see something, but my friend did too. My friend said he didn't see it that well, but he saw it and it looked like it was running upright on two legs. I saw it good. It wasn't a deer or a pig, or anything I ever saw before. It was black, and had areas where it didn't have any hair. In those areas there was shiny skin. If it was someone in a suit they must have spent a lot of money cause I could see its muscles moving, and it would have had to been the shortest track and field star in the world to fit in a suit that small, but I don't even think a track and field star could run that fast. It was going at a slow jog, then it must have smelled or heard us. It slowed down, turning its head while slowing down. Then it stopped, looked at us for around 3 to 4 seconds. Then it ran towards the dark area of the yard, it ran so fast no man can run that fast. It was out of the light where we couldn't see it in like a couple seconds. It must have covered 75 yards in 3 seconds. It was fast. But there wasn't any smell, or strange odor. But after that, we did hear something in the woods. It might not have been what we saw, it could have been anything. But it seemed like whatever it was in the woods was close to us. And I just had this feeling that whatever it was, was watching us.

Front yard has large pole light, lights up the whole front yard, back yard where we were at is dark, and creature ran through front yard.

My uncle did not see the creature, he said y'all didn't see anything, y'all are just messing with me. After that we went inside, nothing else happened, we continued to talk about what we saw. My uncle said that we are crazy.

My friend Aaron saw the creature too. He says he saw it, and could tell it was on two legs. He said he couldn't really see any real good details, he only saw it when it was running away from us on two legs. He was star gazing before the thing ran out.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Daryl Colyer

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that reportedly occurred near Jasper, Texas in Jasper County, Texas at approximately midnight in January 2003.

I spoke at length with both witnesses on 18 June 2006. The two men were eager to discuss the incident and my impression was that they certainly believed that they saw something that defied any normal explanation.

Both witnesses gave accounts of what they saw, and the descriptions were similar. The second witness's description was much more abbreviated; he admittedly did not seem to see the subject as clearly as the first witness. The overall assessment was that the figure somewhat resembled a human, but only because it was upright; according to the witnesses, there were stark differences that gave clear indications that what they saw was not human. The second witness said, "I don't know if bigfoot exists, but what I saw was some kind of upright animal with animal-like movement."

Both men agreed that the color of the figure was uniformly dark, and perhaps black. The first witness was certain that what he saw was "not massive," and was shorter than him at five feet seven inches; the second witness was certain that the figure was no taller than six feet in height. Although a face was visible to the first witness, no details could be discerned beyond that it had eyes and a nose. The subject was reportedly (as described by both observers):

* bent-kneed
* hairy
* had no neck
* bipedal
* fast

The witnesses reportedly first saw the subject peripherally as they were looking into the sky. The distance between the observers and the subject was estimated at no more than 25 yards at that time. The men estimated that the entire encounter lasted perhaps 20 seconds from when they first saw it, until it purportedly disappeared into the darker-shaded area of the front yard. According to the first witness, the subject was "jogging" or moving at a trot, its movements more animal-like than human, when it came to a full stop. At that time, the figure reportedly turned its whole body, looked at the witnesses, then "darted" or sprinted quickly, leaning forward, into the dark area of the yard and ultimately the surrounding woods. The first witness said that his impression of the subject's disposition was that it was very much not aggressive and downright "scared." After the figure disappeared, the first witness said that he was sort of "in shock." The second witness had no idea what he had just seen; he just knew that it was something out of the ordinary and could not be described as any animal that he had ever seen before.

The area is centrally located between the Neches River and the Sabine River; both basins have a history of similar reported encounters. The environment is typical southeast Texas terrain; it is heavily forested with upland pine in abundance and with the lower bottomlands being dominated by hardwoods. B.A. Steinhagen Lake is perhaps 15 miles to the northwest. The Neches Bottom/Jack Gore Baygall Unit of the Big Thicket National Preserve is perhaps 15 miles to the southwest.

The weather was reportedly clear and thus facilitated the witnesses' star gazing. The temperature was estimated by the witnesses to be in the 60s. Visibility was good. There was no moon, but most of the front yard was illuminated by a bright night light that was on a pole in the front yard. This light reportedly made it possible for the witnesses to see the subject with a limited degree of clarity, but by no means was the lighting equivalent to day light.

The first witness related to me that a friend of his supposedly had a strange encounter farther south in Jasper County, near the town of Evadale involving a "large set of eyes" in the woods that seemed to rise up to about seven or eight feet tall. Also, the first witness mentioned that his uncle has had some unexplained events happen in the past. Apparently there have been limbs that crashed against the house from time to time, but no one could provide an explanation about how it may have happened; the closest tree is supposedly well away from the house.

The first witness is convinced that what he saw was a bigfoot, as he distinctly remembered the figure having a "hairy, black" body, with patches of "shiny" skin visible, being clearly upright and bipedal. The second witness seemed to find it more uncomfortable to use the term "bigfoot." As he (second witness) told me, "It was on two legs, running fast, six feet tall, looked black, its legs were bent...it's possible it was a bigfoot." The second witness just seemed unable to come to terms with the possibility that what he saw was the creature known as bigfoot or the sasquatch, although all other indigenous animals seem to clearly fall outside the physical and behavioral profile.
