Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Craig Woolheater

This investigation was conducted as a result of incidents that allegedly occurred in the 1970s in Lamar County, Texas between Powderly and Novice.

I interviewed this witness on 18 March 2002. He had reportedly had two different visual encounters. He claimed his first one was in June or July of 1976. The second encounter reportedly happened a year later. Both incidents occurred in or along Pine Creek; Pine Creek runs into the Red River.

According to the witness, he and his brother, along with his brother?s friend, were sitting on a bridge overlooking Pine Creek. The witness was 17 years old at the time. The other two were a little older. All three had .22 caliber rifles and they were shooting at turtles and snakes. The witness indicated that all three were also experienced hunters and that they had spent most of their lives in the woods and around guns. The witness wanted to emphasize the toughness of the brother?s friend; he told me that the friend had been stabbed, shot, and generally fought many fights. As the witness put it, ??he was as tough as boot leather.?

The witness described how he sat on one side of the bridge, and the brother and his friends on the other. The witness told how a he saw a big dark figure appear in the middle of the creek on his side of the bridge. The witness described it as ?huge.? He only saw the back and the shoulders of the subject, not the face. He described it as having dark brown hair and being covered with dark green moss. It reportedly had a very large head with little to no ears, and little to no neck. The estimated distance of separation was 20 - 25 yards. In that area, the water was approximately three to four feet deep. The witness reasoned that by the size and bulk of the upper torso of the subject that it had to be very large if it stood up. The witness remembered being in total awe. He recalled that he quietly got up, without saying a word to the other two, and walked to the truck close by to retrieve a higher caliber rifle. Before the witness could get back to his spot on the bridge, his brother had moved to his side, and his brother?s friend appeared quite shaken.

The friend had gotten up from his side of the bridge, screaming as he ran off to the truck. The witness remembered that the friend locked both doors of the vehicle and would not let the witness and brother in. When the friend finally opened the door, they found him crying hysterically and wanting to leave immediately. The witness claimed that the friend has refused to discuss the incident ever since.

The second visual encounter supposedly took place on the same creek a year later. The witness was riding his motorcycle when he spotted a similar figure in a field. The witness claimed that he took off in chase after it. The subject fled into the creek. It was a full moon. The witness could make out the silhouette of the subject and nothing else. The smell in the area was bad. The witness went back for some help. He and some of his friends hunted and searched for the subject but all they found was a footprint. The witness dug up the dirt around the footprint and brought the print to Paris Junior College, but no one there could determine the source of the print.
