Witness Account:
I was a newlywed at the time and we were at my brother-in-law's place visiting. I am basically a city boy but my brother-in-law has grown up in the country out there and knows the area very well. We were out squirrel hunting and we also went to check some of his fishing lines. On our way back we were walking in the woods on what looked like a dirt road. I was feeling very uneasy; I could tell something was not right.

We both heard some branches breaking, we heard something hit the ground HARD! Right then we saw it. It walked into the clearing about 50 yards in front of us, stopped and looked at us. It had long brownish hair and was about 7 to 8 feet tall. The only place I didn't see a lot of hair was in the face. I was very curious. I thought it was someone playing a prank or something like that so we kept walking towards it. It walked into the woods and was gone. When we got a little closer the smell was sickening. We took a look around where it had gone in the woods, but we could find nothing but some broken limbs on trees. A lot of them broken up high about 7 to 8 feet, taller than me with my hands over my head.

We kept going to the house and that same feeling that something was not right would not leave me. My brother-in-law was as white as a sheet. As we got closer to the house, we smelled that awful smell again. We heard some breathing and some grunts over to the side of us.

We saw it again standing in between some trees. At that point I was very scared and I just took shots at it. I don't know if I hit it, but it let out a scream/roar that almost made me piss myself. We both took off running for the house and it was keeping pace with us and it was in the thick woods.

Then one thing I remember about it was I could hear it breathing and I could hear branches breaking as it ran. As we got to the edge of his property and it stayed in the tree line back where we could not see it. But we could still hear it grunting screaming. We got to the house and got all the kids inside and stayed. That night we heard that sound on and off most of the night.

Additional observations:
Other than the branches and the deep indents in the ground that was it.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Craig Woolheater

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Harrison County, Texas, in 1998.

I interviewed the primary witness on 25 October 2002. He did not want his name to be disclosed publicly at all. He is currently doing security work for a major corporation.

The witness seemed excited to talk about the sighting and said that he would attempt to put his now ex-brother-in-law in contact with us. He also seemed relieved to be talking to someone about what he saw, and someone who did not think he was crazy.

Incidentally, the witness told me that he formerly was a professional wrestler and had once wrestled Andre the Giant in his career. He said what he saw was bigger than Andre.

The witness was a newlywed who was visiting his brother-in-law who lived 6-7 acres near a river outside of Longview, Texas. The witness and his brother-in-law were out checking the fishing lines, hunting for squirrels with a .22 rifle, and getting to know each other.

As described in his initial report, just after a strange feeling overcame the men, they heard first and then saw a large upright hair-covered figure emerge from the woods in front of them. The witness claimed that the subject made a strange whoop sound, grunted, then went into the woods crossing the trail area in 2-3 steps (5-6 human steps). The witness's first and immediate reaction was that someone was actually in a costume, since what he was seeing did not fully register as a known species in his mind. Almost as quickly he realized that there was no way it was a person in a costume because it would have required that they be on stilts or be extremely unusually tall. The two men decided to return to the brother-in-law's house, post haste.

The witness went on to elaborate how as the two men were heading back, and less than 5 minutes since the encounter, they noticed a very bad smell. They turned to their left and there was the subject again about 20-30 yards away. The witness stated that at that time he fired three shots at it with the .22 rifle which seemed to make it very agitated and angry. The witness remembered that the subject grunted like it had been hit, then roared which went from a low roar to a high scream. The men ran to the house.

By now, the witness recalled, after having been shot, the subject had become extremely agressive, with loud breaking branches and loud breathing sounds noted. The witness felt like the subject could have caught the men at any time while they were running out of the woods. The creature reportedly stopped pursuit once the men reached the clearing near the house. It remained in the trees roaring and shaking the trees and circling the house.

The brother-in-law had placed a very aggressive dog on a cable near the pens to protect the other animals. When the men came running out of the woods after the visual encounter, the dog was reportedly cowering and urinating on itself.

The witness recalled that on that night, another pig came up missing. The brother-in-law heard the dog whimpering and shined a spotlight out to investigate, reportedly saw the subject once more, and fired at it again.

The witness stated that he got a very good clear look at the subject. He described as looking somewhat like a gorilla, but it did not move like one. The witness said that the subject's arms hung down to the knee area. He estimated the height of the subject to be between 8 and 8.5 feet. He estimated its weight at 500 pounds minimum, but may have been actually closer to 700 or 800 pounds. The witness remembered that the subject's color was a dark brown (not chocolate brown, but a dark brown). The witness remembered a rotten odor like a skunk but different. He described it as being reminiscent of a musky, wet, dead dog. The witness described the vocalizations as being low growls evolving into a high pitched screams.

The witness's brother-in-law reportedly had heard vocalizations prior to the sighting but had figured it was a cougar. He had chickens, pigs and goats on his land and they were turning up missing. Something had carried off a hog of 100-150 pounds with no signs of blood in the pen. There reportedly were just some tracks where something had stepped over the fence, grabbed the hog, and stepped back over again.

The witness stated that beside his brother-in-law, I was the only other person that he has spoken about this with.
